“The Last 60”
We all know there are 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute. However, have you noticed there are only 60 days left in this Rotary year? Ask yourself, “What can I do to help my Rotary Club finish strong?”
Have you considered donating to the Annual Fund? Your gift to the Annual Fund helps to create a positive change in communities at home and around the world. This helps us to financially support the six areas of focus of Rotary International: promote peace, provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene, support education, grow local economies, save mothers and children and fight disease. Our goal for this year was $5,000. We have exceed the goal in the amount of $5,760. However, last year we gave $9,342. Let’s see if we can exceed that donation.
Have you considered donating to the Polio Plus Fund? All donations to the Polio Plus Fund assist with operational costs, such as transportation, vaccine delivery and training of health workers. We are on the brink of eradicating polio. A strong push is needed now to end this tenacious disease once and for all. Several of us has donated to the Polio Plus Fund when we sold or purchased the D5830 truck raffle tickets. Our goal for this year was $15,000. As of today, we have donated $14,805. Last year we donated $14,732.96.
Here’s one more item to consider………………invite a potential member to one of our club meetings. Just ask a family member, friend or co-worker, “Do you like food, fun and fellowship?” If the answer is YES, then he/she just might be a Rotarian.
We are participating in the D5830 Membership Drive. Cash prizes and free lunches as well as banners and plaques will be awarded. I am sure we will win one prize if not two prizes.
Let’s work together so we can finish strong in the last 60, Rotary Club of Marshall, TX!

POLIO ERADICATION
"The Last Drop" Is the chant we will be hearing around the world this year, as the fight against Polio draws agonizingly close to the final drop that will mark the complete and utter eradication of this dreaded disease.
Created in 1976, The Marshall Rotary Civic Achievment Award was given to active Rotarians in recognition of their service and contributions to the local community.
The proposal from the Board of Directors is that the Marshall Rotary Club establish an annual award to be called the “Rotary Civic Achievement Award.” This award will be presented annually to a Rotarian who demonstrates the Rotary Ideal of a Service by extraordinary contributions to civic endeavors in Marshall and Harrison County. Dedication, accomplishments and willingness to serve should be considered as indicators of the Rotarian’s commitment to Service Above Self. Although service to our fellow man within the Rotary Club itself is important and should not be ignored, the demonstration of the Ideal of Service to the larger community is the focus of this Civic Achievement Award.
Not less than three nor more than five nominees will be chosen from the Rotary roster by a committee composed of the Chairman of the Marshall City Commission, the County Judge of Harrison County and the President of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce. These nominees will be submitted to a committee composed of the immediate three past presidents of the Marshall Rotary Club, and they will select the recipient of the award. The current Rotary President should serve as a nonvoting ex-officio member of both committees, offering suggestions only when requested to do so by the committee.
Know recipients of the Civic Achiviement Award include the following:
1976-1977 JACK S. MANN 1977-1978 CHARLIE H. FLOWERS 1978-1979 CHARLES SPANGLER 1979-1980 WILLIAM L. GAW, JR
1980-1981 RICHARD W. BLALOCK 1981-1982 SAM R. MOSELEY 1982-1983 LOUIS W. KARIEL, SR 1983-1984 CHARLES B. SMITH 1984-1985 H.A. “TONY” BRIDGE 1985-1986 JAMES E. PEARS 1986-1987 SAM H. MOORE 1987-1988 CECIL C. TOMLINSON 1988-1989 DR. ROBERT E. “JACK” CRAIG 1999-2000 JIM TAYLOR
What makes Rotary so special? Why do Rotarians give so much with so little outward recognition? You never see a hospital, school, or stadium displaying the Rotary Emblem, or "Rotary's" name. There is a reason for that, which can be so fittingly expressed in just 99 words, when Past President Hal Cornish had them included in the Marshall "Rotary Reporter" February 23, 1988. They are as true today as they were then. Thank you for reminding us of this truth Hal:
A true Rotarian is not a builder of monuments of brick and stone.
If we work upon marble it will perish, if we work on brass time will device it, if we erect temples they will crumble into ruins, but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary as expressed in our Objects and with just fear of God and love of fellow man, we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity and make Rotary an immortal force, so long as civilization shall endure.
