“History Made……Let’s Do It Again!”

On Saturday, February 17th we hosted a “Dictionary Label Social” at 1st United Methodist Church. With 27 in attendance, (10 Rotarians, 2 Rotarian spouses, 3 future Rotarians, 4 Interactors, 7 Rotaractors, and 1 RYLA youth) we placed labels in 900 dictionaries within 30 minutes.  Talk about record breaking!  A huge thank you goes to our youth participants.  Be on the lookout for an announcement from Laura Wood, dictionary chair.  She will give us a schedule of days and times when we will distribute the 900 dictionaries to 3rd grade students in Marshall, TX and Hallsville, TX.
On Thursday, February 22nd we celebrated Rotary International’s 113th birthday.  Cody Holloway, Marshall Lions Club President, and Patrick Owens, Marshall Lions Club member, were in attendance.  I presented President Holloway with a certificate of appreciation to the Marshall Lions Club.  Back in 1922, the Marshall Lions Club gave a tribute to our club for the service projects we have completed on a local and international levels.  Did you know that when the initial tribute was made the Lions Club President Myron G. Blalock was related to a member of the Rotary Club of Marshall, Bryan Blalock?  Bryan later served as President of our club, 1936-1937.
Here’s another goal that we can accomplish……….Water and Sanitation.  A few years ago, Rotary International issued a global challenge to its members, asking them to work collectively to improve education quality and access-particularly for girls by working with communities to improve teaching, training curriculums and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.  Did you know that just $24 provides one person with safe water?  By 2030, Rotary International hopes to finish providing everyone with safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Facebook  & Marshall Rotary
Facebook is the best kept secret of the Marshall Texas Rotary club, but not for long.  That has to change. Our club is going to be a lot more fun and better informed because of this new tool.  Web sites and emails are becoming obsolete and Social Interfaces like Facebook are going to be a huge boost to our productivity in the future.

We have had a Facebook site for several years and there are several members who have been posting to the site all along.  For the rest of us this is going to be a learning process for awhile, but as we become more comfortable using it, we will soon realize what a neat tool it is.  April Spears is working on the format, setting up some things for us to use, and straightening out some bugs now, but in a few weeks, we will be sending everyone instructions as to how to get on and use it. If you are a big Facebook user now, and search for "Rotary Club of Marshall Texas" and browse the things that are already posted.  You will be amazed.
